EASA 2019 /// EASA TOURIST /// Switzerland, summer 2019
EASA : European Architecture Students Assembly
EASA : is a platform of exchange connecting students and future professionals within the discipline of architectural construction and thought troughout Europe.
EASA : exists as a decentralized organisation, which isn’t ruled by a board but through its national representants, who are all equal in rights and located throughout the continent.
EASA : is organised by students for students, and therefore creates a unique educational platform where the participants get to live a novel cultural experience.
EASA : allows to experiment architecture in a context that most traditional academic institutions aren’t able to provide. The students are immersed in a specific environment, which is itself defined by a venue and a topic which will guide the Assembly.
This environment leads to intense reflection and discussion about arising questions which the students tackle throught the lense of their own education, challenging each others acquired knowledge. Being their own professors, the students will then propose the answers they found by translating them in a physical form (temporary or permanent constructions, drawings, photography, videos, etc).
«TOURIST», is the focus introduced by EASA 2019. The participants will be brought to explore this problematic under the following three main aspects:
Tourism is a global phenomenon: accessibility to new destinations increases constantly. Specific infrastructure is implemented in order to manage the flow of tourists. This entails an impact on the landscape and the city. The trend gave birth to a vast economic sector on which certain communities depend entirely.
Tourism is a local phenomenon: Villars has historically been one of the first touristic destinations in the Frenchspeaking part of Switzerland. To attain this position, a strong identity and a recognizable iconography have been developed. Postcards, which are now being replaced by social networks, send out this image as a message to the world. Attracting tourism is a goal that requires to be able to absord the incoming flows by building the needed infrastructure: hotels, transport means, leisure, cultural hotspots, shops... In this process, the landscape undergoes deep changes.
EASA somehow also generates tourism: every year, hundreds of people from all over the world gather to discover a place and its culture, and create a dialogue. The discussions, conferences and workshops will tackle these three thematic axes to try to answer one vast question: what are the current conditions and consequences of global tourism, and how will it evolve?
EASA in Switzerland: for the first time, we will meet in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The participants will have the chance to discover the swiss landscapes and its products. The swiss landscape, through its iconic status, will become the scenery of encounter and exchange, but also the object of research of these young travelling architects. They will use the event as a starting point to get around and visit different swiss countries.
EASA in Villars: alpine town connected to the urban coast of the Geneva Lake, Villars-sur-Ollon offers an environment well suited to the study and the development of the topic TOURIST.
The participants will have the possibility of analyzing material and intellectual structures bound to the exploitation of the resort. Moreover, Villars represents an ideal platform for experimentations about architecture in the mountains.
>>>EASA TOURIST will take place in Villars-sur-Ollon (CH) between the 27th of July and the 11th of August 2019!
