Parametric and Fabrication Workshop from DesignMorphine
February, 24-28th, Sofia, Bulgaria
COMPUTATION MATTERS is a workshop for integrative computational design. It presents an extensive introduction to digital design, complex geometry and digital fabrication. The focus of the workshop is the translation between digital morphogenesis, inherent material properties and fabrication execution through the development of parametric geometric models, as well as both digital and physical model analysis. Participants will design systems derived by the explored material behaviour, consisting of three-dimensional components aggregated within a network. The aim is the development of performative systems for a wide range of architectural, interior and product design applications.

The material chosen is polypropylene due to the large domain of material properties that can be subject to exploration. Physical experiments will be carried out in order to obtain understanding of the inherent material properties, which will be translated into digital environment. Components will be developed through polypropylene sheet manipulation techniques – bending, twisting or folding. Digital simulations andstructural analysis will be carried out for components and aggregations in parallel with physical prototyping.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
– Introduction to Grasshopper and algorithmic geometry
– Creating complex geometries through parametric modelling
– Structural analysis techniques with Karamba 3D
– Interactive physics simulations with Kangaroo
– Digital fabrication techniques with FabTools and Generation
– Understanding of performative design
Participants should provide their own laptops with the following software installed. If you do not have the software, trial versions and discount student licences are available on the companies’ websites.
– Karamba 3D
COMPUTATION MATTERS workshop will expand from 24 to 28 Februrary2016.
Daily meetings will take place from 9:30 to 18:00 at Union of Architects, 11 Krakra Str, Sofia, Bulgaria.
For attending the workshop there is no previous software experience required.
All projects will be published and an exhibition will be organised in the end of the workshop.
Participants need to bring their own laptops or workstations.
